Optus Fully Restores NBN Broadband in Brisbane & Queensland After Outage Affecting 95,000 Customers

Optus fully restored NBN broadband services in Brisbane and Queensland on Dec 4, after a Dec 3 outage affected 95,000 customers due to a server failure.

Optus Restores NBN Services in Brisbane and Queensland After Outage

Australian telecommunications provider Optus has successfully restored its National Broadband Network (NBN) services throughout Brisbane and other impacted areas of Queensland. The company confirmed the full resolution of the outage on December 4th, following a disruption that affected an estimated 95,000 customers.

Details of the Disruption

The service interruption, which commenced on December 3rd, was attributed to a network server failure at Optus' Rochedale exchange in Brisbane. This technical issue led to widespread broadband connectivity problems for customers in the region.

Impact on Emergency and Mobile Services

Optus, a subsidiary of Singtel, assured the public that essential emergency "000" call services and its mobile network remained unaffected during the broadband outage. However, the telco did note that voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) phone calls relying on NBN broadband connections could have experienced disruptions, especially for users with older modems lacking 4G or 5G backup functionalities.

Recent Challenges and Ongoing Scrutiny

This incident comes on the heels of significant challenges for Optus. Just two months prior, the company faced a parliamentary inquiry following two consecutive emergency call outages that impacted thousands of individuals and were tragically linked to four deaths. Singtel, Optus' parent company, has not yet provided a statement regarding this latest service interruption.
