An 18-month-old girl, Amalia, was detained by US immigration authorities and hospitalized with a life-threatening respiratory illness. Despite her condition, she was returned to ICE custody where she was denied medication.
The lawsuit filed in Texas federal court seeks the release of Amalia and her parents, who were also detained. The family was initially held at a facility in Dilley, Texas, during a check-in on December 11. Amalia was hospitalized from January 18 to 28 but was returned to the facility amid a measles outbreak.Attorney Elora Mukherjee highlighted the poor conditions at Dilley, including lack of clean water, food, and medical care for hundreds of detainees.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment. The case sheds light on Trump's administration's controversial policies and violations of court orders during mass deportations.
