A harrowing incident unfolded on a walking trail in British Columbia, Canada, when a grizzly bear launched an attack on a group of schoolchildren and their teachers. The sudden assault resulted in 11 people sustaining injuries, with two individuals in critical condition following the Thursday afternoon event.

The attack occurred in Bella Coola, a community located approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) northwest of Vancouver. Among the critically injured was a male teacher, lauded for his valiant efforts to fend off the aggressive bear. Accounts from the scene described the bear coming so close that one 10-year-old student, Alvarez Schooner, could reportedly “feel its fur.”

Details of the Harrowing Incident

Emergency Health Services spokesman Brian Twaites confirmed that two people were critically injured and two others had serious injuries, while the remaining seven received treatment at the scene. Parent Veronica Schooner, whose son Alvarez was part of the fourth- and fifth-grade class involved, highlighted the teacher’s bravery, noting he “got the whole brunt of it” while attempting to protect the group. Both critically injured individuals were airlifted from the remote location for advanced medical care.

Ongoing Alert and Community Safety

Following the incident, the Nuxalk Nation issued an urgent social media advisory, confirming that the aggressive grizzly bear remained at large on Thursday evening. They warned residents to “Remain indoors and off the highway,” emphasizing the presence of armed police and conservation officers actively managing the situation in the area.

Understanding Grizzly Behavior

Grizzly bears are known to be particularly active during this time of year, often searching for migrating salmon to build up their fat reserves in preparation for winter hibernation. This seasonal behavior underscores the importance of caution in wilderness areas where such wildlife is prevalent. The community of Bella Coola remains on high alert as authorities continue their efforts to ensure public safety and locate the bear.
