A significant drone attack on the Khor Mor gasfield in northern Iraq on the night of November 26, 2025, has forced the vital energy facility to suspend operations. This disruption has led to widespread power outages across a substantial portion of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region, severely impacting its economic stability and security.
The assault occurred around 11:30 PM local time (20:30 GMT), striking several gas storage tanks. The impact triggered an explosion and a large fire, resulting in injuries to multiple workers. Although initial reports indicate no fatalities, the incident has had immediate and tangible consequences, affecting approximately 8 percent of the regional power grid, according to local officials.
Iraq's central military command, the Joint Operations Command, stated that the attack's primary objective appeared to be a disruption of the region's overall security and economic stability.
The Khor Mor gasfield, a critical energy asset, is operated by the United Arab Emirates-based company Dana Gas. It is strategically located between the cities of Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah in northern Iraq. Following the attack, both the government and Dana Gas have deployed teams to investigate the incident thoroughly. Field engineers estimate that repairs to the damaged gas tanks could take between two to three days.
While no group has yet claimed responsibility for this latest drone attack, the Khor Mor facility has been a recurring target. Earlier in the week, security forces successfully thwarted a similar drone attempt on the gasfield. Tragically, this is not an isolated event, as four workers were killed in a previous drone attack on the same facility in 2024, highlighting an ongoing vulnerability to such assaults.
