Jeanine Pirro, the US lawyer for the District of Columbia, confirmed the escalated charges during an interview, stating, “There are certainly many more charges to come, but we are upgrading the initial charges of assault to murder in the first degree.”

The deadly incident also left US Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, in critical condition. Both service members were reportedly shot during an attack in the nation’s capital. Authorities have identified Lakanwal, 29, as the suspected gunman. He is known to have previously worked with US forces and the CIA in Afghanistan before arriving in the United States in 2021.
