Wang Fuk Court Fire: Residents Return to Unaffected Block for Essentials

A poignant scene unfolded on Wednesday as residents of Wang Chi House, the solitary building untouched by a devastating fire at Hong Kong's Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, were granted a brief, emotional return to their homes. Following the tragic blaze, individuals and families, some visibly distressed, were allowed to re-enter their flats to collect essential belongings.

Controlled Re-entry Process

Accompanying government personnel, residents arrived individually and via shuttle buses to the site. The meticulously organized re-entry process permitted two members from each household to access their apartments for a strict duration of 90 minutes, between 9 am and 9 pm. This limited window necessitated focused and efficient efforts to gather items of paramount importance.

Securing Valuables Amidst Tragedy

Among those making the somber journey was 71-year-old retiree Manly Yu Chun-cheung. He and his wife carefully packed warm clothing, critical personal documents, passports, bank cards, cherished jewellery, and their marriage certificate. Yu, who has called Wang Chi House home for roughly four decades, commended the operation as remarkably smooth, affirming they had sufficient time to secure their valuables. He noted that, despite the widespread devastation in the vicinity, his flat remained largely unaffected, save for its front door.

This controlled re-entry offered a vital opportunity for those displaced to reclaim a sense of continuity and retrieve irreplaceable possessions, providing a small measure of solace amidst the broader tragedy that engulfed the Tai Po community.
