Canada and France urge Israel to avoid planned ground operations in southern Lebanon, warning of severe humanitarian impact and civilian suffering.
Canada has strongly condemned Israel’s plans to invade southern Lebanon, warning that Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity must not be violated. The move comes amid rising death toll from Israeli attacks in Lebanon, with over 1,072 people killed and thousands wounded since the start of March.
Israel’s military preparations include a ground invasion targeting up to 30km (18.6 miles) inside Lebanon’s southern border. This action raises concerns about further humanitarian crises and civilian displacement, as seen in the current conflict's impact on Beirut and other regions.
Both Canada and France have issued statements urging Israel to refrain from such actions, emphasizing the protection of civilians and adherence to international law. The French Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot warned that such moves would have major humanitarian consequences and exacerbate Lebanon’s already dire situation.
Canada’s Ministry of Global Affairs expressed solidarity with the Lebanese government and people, urging all parties to act in accordance with international law and protect civilians. The statements highlight the need for peacekeepers and avoidance of attacks on infrastructure and health workers.
